African-Americans

I have found that I tend to work well with African-American/Black clients. I went to schools in Minneapolis with Black majorities. That experience included a Black teacher who shaped me into the man I am. This has given me a deep appreciation for Black cultural values like spirituality, family and extended family, respect for elders, politeness, and telling it like it is. Because I have been loved and mentored by members of the Black community, I recognize that I owe them something. I have made a conscious decision to give back by advertising to and serving African-American clients, particularly Black men who love men.

That’s fine, but being a therapist requires a whole different level of experience. I have been professionally committed to racial justice in my practice since it started in 2011. I regularly attend professional development classes on topics related to my specialties, such as Black sexuality and Black relationships. I also pay a Black female therapist as an expert consultant to maintain cultural competency when working with Black clients.

In my non-professional life, this commitment continues with my involvement in nonprofit work.

I recognize that Black clients may want to work with a Black therapist, and if so, I offer these referrals to you:

Otherwise, if you are open to psychological services provided by a white man with a love of Black culture, please give me a call.
